Celebrating Family!

08 May 2015 / Leave a Comment

Hey there!  It's Tara from 180 Days and Counting.  With Mother's Day, literally, right around the corner and Father's Day quickly approaching; I thought I would share some fun activities for your students do in-order to celebrate their families.  I've done a mixture of these over the years.  Since it is Friday, it's a bit late to make these with your students for Mother's Day but you still have time to make them with your own kiddos, at home!!
Awesome Bookmarks!!!
A few years ago, I came across this AWESOME Mother's Day gift from Creative Family Moments. We have made them in my classroom ever since!!!  My only "gripe" with the project is the tassels. Every year I'm determined to have my students make them on their own.  And, every year, without fail, approximately 3 kids can make them independently.  The rest need teacher support and it ends up taking up more time than I planned.  Well, this year I came up with a solution to my problem...foam pieces!!!!  I bought star foam pieces and the kids used them to look like balloons.  I had lots of foam pieces left over, so another teacher on my team used them.  She was overjoyed with how easy the project was!!  The kids thought they were so cool!!  What do you think?
Wordle
Have you ever used Wordle?  I love it!!  What a fun way for students to express their feelings about their family AND it's a great review of academic skills!!  For Mother's Day, I have the kids write adjectives to describe their mom and verbs to tell about things she does or likes.  For Father's Day I have the kids write similes.  They both turn out so cute and the kids love coming up with ideas about their parents.  Check out two examples...
Poetry
Who doesn't love a good poem?  I have two freebies in my store for Mother's Day and Father's Day.  Each one has an alternative page for grandma and grandpa!  Click on the pictures below.  Feedback is always appreciated!!
Paper Bag Books
I've never felt the need to buy a product for Mother's Day or Father's Day.  That is until I came across these cute Paper Bag Books from Diary of a Not So Wimpy Teacher.  Paper Bag Books are the new rage in my class!!  Click on each picture to be brought to the products.

Cards
My head is still spinning from all the Mother's Day and Father's Day cards on Pinterest.  There are TONS to choose from.  Here are the two we're making this year.  My students made the Mother's Day cards this week.  Click on the Father's Day card to head over to Kaminski's Creations to see how to make a Superman card!

If you don't see anything you like, you can check out my Pinterest Boards for additional ideas.
