My Go-To Teacher-to-Teacher Gift

21 December 2015 / 1 comment
This year, my life came full circle. One night recently, as I worked in the kitchen making gifts for my 1 year-old son's daycare teachers, I thought back to wonderful times making gifts for my own teachers; I also thought of the thoughtful, handmade goods gifted to me from my classroom crew of students. Last, I looked at myself spending time making gifts of appreciation for the people who work so selflessly to tend to my son with love, care, and affection every day while I am at work. It was a truly special moment for me.

But it got me thinking---In the midst of the holiday hustle and bustle, we as teachers often spend countless hours making or buying gifts for our students, while we also graciously and excitedly accept thoughtful gifts from our students. In the whirlwind of generosity and on top of gift-buying for our family and friends, we are often left scrounging at the last minute for gifts for our colleagues, some of the most important and present people in our lives---certainly not meant to be afterthoughts!

Well friends, fear no more. The very gift I made my son's teachers this year serves as the perfect, thoughtful gift for any deserving team of teachers. Readers, meet Peppermint Vanilla Sugar Scrub. Sugar Scrub, meet Readers:

Because, what teacher doesn't want to feel pampered, relaxed, soft, and smell good?!

The best part about this gift (in addition to how yummy it smells), is the cost. Read on, readers:

6 cups sugar (I used granulated--plain old white sugar)
1 cup oil (I used coconut--any will work, other than a strongly scented olive oil)
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. peppermint extract

If you want color, use 6 drops of green food coloring and 3 drops of blue. Mix and put in cut little jars, and voila! This recipe makes 12 4-oz. jars, which cost me roughly $1 per recipient.

Added bonus: This makes a great gift for parent volunteers as well!

I hope this recipe finds its way to your kitchen and into the hearts (and hands!) of your treasured teaching teammates for years to come. Happy Holidays, all!
